When is the best time to book movers for CU Boulder move-in?

The best time to book movers for a CU Boulder move-in is at least one month ahead of your move date. That said, we can usually accommodate a handful of last-minute requests depending on availability. The most important thing isn't just booking early — it's booking with a company that has a proven reputation. There are two things that matter most when you're moving into a college apartment before classes start: first, your movers actually show up, and second, they get everything done efficiently so you can focus on all the other things that come with starting a new semester. We've run multiple crews simultaneously on campus routes in The Hill and Baseline Road areas, completing dozens of studio-sized moves in a single day before Fall classes begin. People who wait until August often find the most reliable companies are already fully booked.

How do CU students moving off campus for the first time avoid common mistakes?

Parking is the biggest one — and it's almost always avoidable with a little planning. In The Hill and along the Baseline Road corridor, street parking is extremely competitive, especially on weekends. If you don't have a spot secured close to your entrance, your movers may end up walking a significant distance around the block on every single trip, which adds real time and cost to your move. Our best advice: park your own car right in front of your building entrance the evening before your move to hold the spot. When we arrive, we simply swap your car out for the moving truck. The other big mistake first-time movers make is scheduling on the same day as their roommates or neighbors. If you have any flexibility, moving on a weekday afternoon is significantly smoother than a weekend morning. Weekends — especially in August near CU — are extremely high demand for moving services across the entire Boulder area.

Is it worth hiring movers for a small CU apartment?

Absolutely — and we've proven it on jobs that were as small as a single item. We've helped parents deliver brand new living room furniture and a mattress to their son on The Hill on the same day he got the keys to his new apartment. It was a small job, but it meant everything to that family. Even a handful of boxes and a few pieces of furniture can be exhausting to carry up multi-floor stairs, especially when you're also trying to set up a new place and get ready for the school year. Hiring movers for a small CU apartment means you spend your energy on what matters — not on making 10 trips up a narrow staircase.

How do movers handle parking near Pearl Street in Boulder?

Pearl Street and the surrounding downtown corridor require planning ahead. If a dedicated loading zone or alleyway access isn't available, the most reliable approach is securing a parking spot before the move date — which is exactly what we ask customers to help with. We'll identify the best possible spot for the moving truck ahead of time and ask the customer to park their own vehicle there the evening before. When we arrive, we swap their car out for the moving truck and we're positioned correctly from the start. We've moved offices on and near Pearl Street multiple times and this approach consistently saves significant time. In high foot and car traffic areas, logistics make or break how smoothly a move goes.

Can movers navigate the narrow staircases in older Boulder homes?

It can genuinely surprise people what we're able to accomplish in older homes and tight spaces — but no honest mover should guarantee a large item will fit without measuring first. We always recommend that customers measure anything they think could be a challenge before move day, so there are no surprises when the crew arrives. One of the most demanding moves we've handled in Boulder was in the Baseline Road area near Foothills Parkway. A customer who had lived in their home for many decades was facing code enforcement fines for items left outside. We had to move fast — multiple two-person crews booked quickly, working a single property simultaneously. Beyond the physical challenge, the real complexity was logistics: coordinating which items went to junk, which went to donation, and which needed to reach other family members, all under time pressure. We got it done.

What's the hardest part of moving in Boulder, CO?

If we had to name one thing that separates Boulder moves from a typical Front Range job, it's traffic and parking — specifically on high-demand streets like Pennsylvania Avenue during peak times. Foot traffic, car traffic, and overfilled parking lots at certain times of day can turn what should be a straightforward move into a much longer one if you're not prepared. The solution is timing and positioning. We plan move start times around traffic patterns, coordinate parking in advance, and when necessary use the car-swap technique to make sure our truck is always in the right place before the first item gets carried out.

How do you move a home in the Boulder foothills — Canyon Road, Flagstaff, or 4 Mile Canyon?

The thing most people don't think about before a foothills move is the path itself — specifically the outdoor staircases and stone walkways leading up to the home. Some of those approaches can be uneven, narrow, and genuinely dangerous when you're carrying heavy furniture. Our standard practice for foothills moves is to walk every route before we carry a single item. We identify any steps to watch, surfaces to avoid, and tight corners to pre-plan. We're fully insured and licensed with the state of Colorado, so if anything unexpected happens, customers are protected. But the real value is the walk-through — it means we move confidently and nothing gets damaged or anyone gets hurt because we didn't look first.

Are there moving companies in Boulder that also serve mountain areas like Nederland or Leadville?

Yes — and we're one of the few that will actually say yes when you ask. We've moved people well beyond the immediate Boulder area, including Boulder graduates relocating to towns like Nederland and Leadville. Mountain towns present unique challenges — longer drive times, high altitude, limited truck access on some roads — but we have a can-do culture at MoveKings. If we haven't done something before, we work through it with the customer rather than declining. We're also willing to get creative on pricing for customers who are flexible. If you can be flexible on timing, crew size, or the day of your move, we can often find a way to make it work within a tighter budget.

Do MoveKings movers serve the entire Boulder County area?

We serve all of Boulder and Boulder County, including The Hill, Mapleton Hill, Table Mesa, Shanahan Ridge, Chautauqua, Gunbarrel, Gunpark, and the foothills communities up Canyon Road, Flagstaff Road, and 4 Mile Canyon. We also regularly move people between Boulder and the full Front Range — Longmont, Loveland, Fort Collins, Denver, and beyond. If you're not sure whether we cover your area, call us — the answer is almost always yes.

Why are people moving from Boulder to Longmont?

We've had this conversation with customers more times than we can count. The most common reasons we hear: lower cost of living, more space for the same budget, quieter neighborhoods for families, and the ability to own a home instead of renting an apartment. Longmont has grown significantly and many people — especially CU grads who fell in love with the area — choose it as their first real home after Boulder. We move that route regularly and can say from experience: the transition is almost always a happy one.

How long does a move within Longmont typically take?

Based on our actual jobs: a small one-bedroom apartment with a two-person crew typically takes 2–3 hours. A standard two-bedroom takes 3–4 hours. A full three or four-bedroom household can range from 5–8 hours depending on how packed the home is, whether there are stairs, and how far apart the locations are. What adds the most time — across every job — is items that aren't pre-packed, large furniture that needs disassembly, and moves with multiple flights of stairs at either location. We give honest time estimates upfront so there are no surprises.
